Whole-fiEld Simulated/ExperimentaL data compariSon (WEaSELS)

The aerospace industry is making increasing use of full-field experimental displacement and strain measurement methods to monitor a wide range of mechanical tests, from simple material coupons to whole-aircraft fatigue tests.

Digital image correlation (DIC) is becoming one of these established tools, and while DIC data is regularly used to validate finite element simulations of the strains developed in aircraft structures, there are considerable challenges in making quantitative comparisons between the experimental and simulated strain information.

This proposal details the development of a comprehensive, rigorous, and robust method to make a quantitative comparison between the experimental displacement/strain data from mechanical tests and the corresponding simulated data from finite element models of the same component.
